Community Mondays: New Roots Community Farm & San Diego Memoir Writers’ Association

Gup Shup – Immigrant Stories

Oct 2, 2023 at La Atalaya Foundation Theater in Balboa Park: The San Diego Writers Festival presents an honest and raw dialogue about immigrant experiences and the food that shapes their lives.

This event brings together esteemed authors such as Huda Al-Marashi, author of “First Comes Marriage: My Not-So-Typical American Love Story,” and Jane Muschenetz, a poet and author of “All the Bad Girls Wear Russian Accents,” along with the insightful moderation of Madushree Ghosh, author of “Khabaar: An Immigrant Journey of Food, Memory, and Family.” Beyond captivating literary discussions, this festival taps into the transformative power of food to enrich our cultural landscape.

By exploring the culinary traditions that immigrants bring with them, we celebrate the diverse tapestry of cultures that contribute to our society, break down stereotypes, and humanize the immigrant experience.

Enjoy special readings of the authors’ writings paired with sample dish tastings from the countries of Sudan, Iraq, Ukraine, and India.

The event also features farmers from the New Roots Community Garden, highlighting the economic and social contributions of immigrant communities.

With Q&A sessions, book signings, and a focus on the intergenerational aspects of immigrant identity, this festival offers a unique and enriching perspective on the significance of food and immigration in our world today.
